XBMC v 1.0.0 Final Images

I have posted a site with plenty of XBMC (Xbox Media Center) Images that I took earlier today. XBMC v.1.0.0 Final was released June 29th. For more information about XBMC see this site.

Check out the Images HERE! Beware that the Images are pretty large and all thrown together into a single page. So be prepared for a +1mb page.

Your Xbox does not require a router!

Despite what lots of people say, you don't need to go out and buy a router to communicate with the Xbox. People tend to forget that you are able to use a Cat5 Cable to network devices such as the Xbox.
For those of you not familiar with Cat5 cables, they are basically the same as your normal ethernet cables, only the wires are mixed up in a different order. If you have the supplies to create your own ethernet cables (like me ) you can make a Cat5 cable. just follow the directions listed in this link.

For those of you that don't have access to a home networking kit, you can buy Cat5 cables at most electronic stores. Below are some links to online stores that carry them. I suggest Newegg.com, they are inexpensive and have very fast shipping.

Radioshack
Circuit City Kit
New Egg

Be sure to check out the other Newegg Cat5 cables, they sell it in a variety of lengths and all are great deals.

By purchasing a Cat5 cable for 3 bucks, you save yourself at least 20 dollars by not purchasing a router. It also helps save space, and doesn't require a power outlet. But I do still suggest that if you ever think that you will ever want a router, go ahead and buy a cheap router from Netgear of Linksys. Routers are great hardware firewalls and come in handy in the long run.

Xbox N64 Emulator Tutorial

I posted a tutorial in the Ozxodous Forums today, and thought that a copy of it would be fitting in here. To check out what the posting is all about check out the forum thread here.
For those too lazy to click on the link, below is a guide to getting the xbox program Surreal64 to recognize ROMs.
___________________________________________________________________

For a while I had the same problem as everyone else in this forum. My ROMs wouldn't show up in the game list when using the Surreal64_V1.0 Emulator. But after an hour of fiddling around, I found the answer to why the ROMs weren't being listed. So here is a guide for you guys to follow, hopefully it will get at least a couple of your ROMs to work.

First...
I am assuming that you have already downloaded Surreal64_V1.0 and installed it in the proper directory. So if you don't have Surreal running on your Xbox, look somewhere else for that tutorial. I'm going to walk through this in 2 main steps, the first is editing the config file. If you have already done that, skip to the second step.

So, open up the Surreal configuration file...
Set the Rom path to whatever you want it to be. I'll use mine as an example: Rom Path=F:\Apps\Emulators\Surreal64_V1.0\roms Make sure that the media path corresponds also
example: Media Path=F:\Apps\Emulators\Surreal64_V1.0\Media Then open up the ultra config file, scroll down to where they have the rompath command and fill in the same location so...
example: rompath=F:\Apps\Emulators\Surreal64_V1.0\romsand that's it for editing the config files.

Next I'm going to cover the big problem.
When you download/create a rom for a N64 game you need to name the file so that Surreal64 can recognize it. If the name is not exactly what Surreal is looking for it will not recognize the file. This is the big problem that needs to be fixed. And here's how you can fix it.
Figure out what games/rom you have, for example lets use the game Wipeout 64. You know that you have the ROM for this game, but it's not showing up in Surreal. So open up the 1964 config file with notepad and go to the Edit tab, then select Find.... Type in Wipeout then click on find. You will find two paragraphs using the word Wipeout. The second paragraph should look something like this...

[132D2732-C70E9118-C:45]
Game Name=Wipeout 64
Comments=Playable!
Alternate Title=Wipeout 64 (U) [!]
EEPROM Size=1

This bit of info is very important. If your ROM file is named "Wipeout 64" and it isn't running, try renaming it to "Wipeout 64 (U) [!]". Sometimes it will recognize the normal game name, and other times it will accept the alternative title. It's all a matter of trying out different titles for the ROMs. You can also try using the Surreal64 config file. The search results for Wipeout 64 using the Surreal64 config file should look like this...

[132D2732-C70E9118-C:45]
Game Name=Wipeout 64
Alternate Title=Wipeout 64 (U) [!]
Comments=

After you have renamed some of your files, transfer the roms to the rom folder listed earlier in the tutorial. Then load up Surreal64 on your Xbox.
Make Sure that you click on the REFRESH ICON on the lower right hand side of the screen, this will relist your files. It took me a while to figure that one out. If the file doesn't work try sticking it in a .zip folder. Placing games in a .zip will save you lots of space anyhows.

Below is an image of my games, to help you see what some of the titles are and what format they need to be (.n64 or .zip).

Okay, that's it for this tutorial, so I hope I have helped you out. If you get your ROMs working let me know. If not, good luck to ya.

Portishead

This weeks band has been in my music library for a few months now, and I felt like I needed to recognize them for being such a unique band. Portishead can't be summed up as easily as most bands because the music they play fluctuates between acid jazz and dance. Portishead plays fresh new music that you don't hear anywhere else.

New Site Features...

I want to point out that there is a new tab to the right side of the page called "SCAD Facts". It will scroll through some facts about SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design, AKA my college). I'm still seeking more filler for the tabs, so expect more content soon. Perhaps some headline news or the weather. I also brought back the ability to leave comments on the site, but I'm still tweaking it so expect some changes in that area. If you have any suggestions please leave a comment under this post. If you're a HTML Junkie, a link to some useful HTML, Javascript, or even some useful Blogger code would be much appreciated

I just noticed that Arwen had a LiveJournal page, so I gave her a space in the links area over to the right. In the background of the page she has the linux penguin "Tux", and I bet she didn't even know that the penguin had a name or what it stood for. In a somewhat related story, here's a link about how Tux came to be.

AudioBlogging, Grab a Phone!

I have discovered the greatest blog innovation since Photo Blogging. AudioBlogging! Normally AudioBlogging is used by the author of a site, but I'm going to hand over the responsibility to any of my close friends who have some spare time and a phone. Watch for some AudioBlogs in the near future, they could come from just about anyone.

W.Bloggar meets Windows Media Player.

I just grabbed a plug-in for Windows Media Player 9 that lets me post whatever song I'm listening to when I add a blog. I'm also using a new program called W.Bloggar (v 3.03.) which makes it easier to post blogs. The interface is very Microsoft Wordlike, simple but effective. And it allows you to add some quick html to the page which saves me time. I'm doing my best to publish this blog while listening to a sweet song, so you can check out how the plug-in works. I do believe that I have caught a slight error in the plug-in though. When I play a song all three main fields (artist, title, album), then play a song with only two of the fields, the plug-in will fill in the missing field from the previous song.
For example if I played "Under the Bridge" by the Redhot Chili Peppers from the album "Under the Bridge", it would be listed as "Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers - Greatest Hits". Then if I played a song like "Let it Be" by The Beatles and the album was unknown, it would list it as: "Let it Be - The Beatles - Greatest Hits", even though there should be no album name.
So if you end up using this plugin you can quickly fix this problem by simply shutting down Windows Media Player and starting it back up to clear the memory. Or you could just remove the album command from the w.bloggar settings by deleting the Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Po from the Media String command under the Media tab.

Diet and Excercise

Since I have very little to do this summer, I'm going to try to do my best at eating healthy and working out. So I put together a little diet sheet/workout sheet to keep me on track. Thought someone out there might appreciate it. You can download the Microsoft Word version of the Muscle Building Plan Here.

Artist of the Week - Kraftwerk

If you're into awesome 80's themed music you have to check out Kraftwerk. Kraftwerk's site design fits the band perfectly. There is tons of fun stuff to play with. Video's, flash games, images, and some music. Kraftwerk music is a mix of Blue Man Group creativity with a Beverly Hills Cop theme.

The Future of P2P

Even though the RIAA has been issuing lawsuits left and right over the past couple years, many P2P users haven't stopped sharing and downloading copyrighted material over the internet. P2P programs and certain IRC channels have become the wild west of the internet. There are no forms of regulation over what goes in and out of these unmoderated channels. And in many ways this is a great thing, but the entertainment industry thinks differently. The RIAA (representing many recording artists) claim that P2P sharing has cost them millions of dollars over the past few years. In 2003 the RIAA claimed that the music industry's revenue decreased by 7%. As it turns out, the music industry was strong as ever last year. They increased sales by 10% over the past year. Find out details about how the RIAA was able to claim a 7% drop in sales.
If you aren't a fan of the RIAA, or perhaps you're a fan of privacy and free speech, check out EFF.org. The EFF are the people fighting for our digital rights. Please support them by visiting their site, and if you're feeling extra generous participate by writing a letter/fax/email to your local politicians. The EFF even provides a digital letter for you, all you need to do is sign it.

007 - Time Goes Backwards

I was wandering the internet today looking for some modded software for my xbox and came across this pretty piece of software. It's called 007 - Time Goes Backwards, but that's just a fancy name for Goldeneye for the PC. Yeah, I said Goldeneye so you can get excited now. For those of you who aren't familiar with Goldeneye for the Nintendo 64, it was only one of the greatest games of all time. In fact, it is the greatest multiplayer game to date. Lucky for us, someone decided to port Goldeneye to the PC using the Quake 2 game engine. The port isn't a fully functional version of the original (because who wants to break copyright laws?) but it offers an amazing replica of the multiplayer mode. It's a small file to download and its free. The only downside is that you need to register for fileplanet to download the file, but that takes no time at all and will come in handy in the future if you're into games. The game is still in a beta mode, so don't expect wonders from it. Expect to come across lots of glitches, like not being able to operate the in game menu very well.
